Slayer Guitarist Diagnosed with Flesh-Eating Disease, To Sit Out Soundwave Dates

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman will sit out the band’s upcoming Australian Soundwave Festival dates after being diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a rare skin infection also known as flesh-eating disease.

Hanneman underwent immediate surgery in late January after contracting a serious infection on his right arm. He was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, which doctors believe was caused by a spider bite.

The band will call on a guest guitarist to replace Hanneman on its upcoming Soundwave dates, set to kick off on February 26.

Hanneman is currently at home undergoing medical treatment, and is expected to make a full recovery.
